Kakoli Borkotoky, International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS)
In spite of the remarkable expansion of elementary education system, large number of children in India still continues to be out of school. This section of the society required special attention. The purpose of this paper is to examine school attendance pattern i.e. never attended & currently attending, and pattern of dropout. We also examined the reasons of dropout and association of different background characteristic with the dropouts. In addition we also examined the effects of different levels of women’s education on the educational attainment of next generation. We applied logistic regression and cluster analysis to study the school attendance pattern. Cox regression was used to examine pattern of dropout. Preliminary analysis shows that place of residence & religions are important determinants for both never attended and school dropout. The study further suggests that children are more likely to have one level of higher education to their parents.
